wildlife-friendly care
There are some gardens that simply deserve to be understood, this property is one of them.

Set within the East Sussex countryside, this remarkable listed property is made up of a series of very different garden spaces that have evolved over many decades.
For three years we had the privilege of caring for this extraordinary garden every week, helping it flourish through every season while respecting the history, character and ecology that make it so special.

The Garden
This beautiful space isn't just one garden, It's a collection of landscapes.
Each requiring its own horticultural approach.
Across the property you'll find:
-
A productive kitchen garden
-
Mature mixed borders
-
A wildlife meadow
-
An orchard
-
Wildlife habitats
-
Stream & native bank management
-
Woodland planting
-
Mature specimen trees
-
Beautiful seasonal containers
-
Areas managed specifically to encourage biodiversity
-
A diverse wildlife pond
-
Natural animal enclosures
No two areas are maintained in quite the same way.
Each responds differently to the seasons, the soil and the surrounding landscape.

Our Role
Our work extended far beyond regular maintenance.
Over three years we became trusted custodians of the garden, helping it evolve while protecting everything that already made it exceptional.

Our role included:
Weekly horticultural care
Seasonal border management
Planting and plant selection
Orchard care
Meadow management
Wildlife habitat improvements
Creation of a wildlife pond
Planting thousands of additional plants
Building pergolas, fencing and decking
Caring for specimen trees and shrubs
Managing seasonal containers
Ongoing garden improvements
Gabion basket installation
Corten Steel edging installation
Every decision was made with one question in mind:
How can we make this garden even more beautiful while remaining true to its character?
A Garden That
Continues To Evolve
-
One of the greatest pleasures of caring for this beautiful Wadhurst estate was never feeling that the work was finished.
-
Beautiful gardens should never stand still.
-
Over three years we helped strengthen planting combinations, increase biodiversity, introduce new habitats, improve seasonal interest and carefully guide the garden forward without losing its identity.
-
Some improvements were almost invisible.
-
Others transformed whole areas.
-
Collectively they allowed the garden to mature naturally rather than being repeatedly redesigned.

Working With Nature
One of the defining characteristics of this garden is its relationship with wildlife.

The garden provides habitat for birds, insects and countless other species, while productive areas continue to support traditional country gardening.

Our approach reflected those values.
Wherever possible we never use routine chemical weedkillers, we fully encouraged biodiversity and worked alongside nature rather than against it.

The result is a garden that feels both beautifully maintained and wonderfully alive.
What This Garden
Teaches Us
Every established garden has its own rhythm. Some areas need careful intervention, while others thrive when left to evolve naturally. The art lies in knowing the difference. Over three years, this property has reminded us that the most beautiful gardens aren't controlled - they're thoughtfully guided.

Frequently Asked Questions About Caring for Established Gardens
Do you only look after large gardens like this?
Not at all. While we are privileged to care for larger private gardens and estates, we also work with smaller gardens where clients value expert horticultural care, thoughtful planting and long-term improvement. The common thread isn't the size of the garden—it's working with people who genuinely care about their outdoor space.
How often do you visit gardens like this?
Every garden is different. Some clients choose weekly visits throughout the year, while others prefer fortnightly or seasonal care. We recommend a maintenance schedule based on the size of the garden, the complexity of the planting and how you use your outdoor space.

Do you redesign established gardens?
Only where it's beneficial. We believe many established gardens can be transformed without removing everything and starting again. Often, thoughtful planting, careful pruning and gradual improvements achieve a far better result while preserving the garden's character.

Do you use chemical weedkillers?
No.
Consciously Grown does not use chemical weedkillers.
We believe beautiful gardens can be created and maintained without relying on synthetic herbicides. Instead, we use horticultural knowledge, thoughtful planting, careful cultivation and regular maintenance to keep gardens healthy, beautiful and naturally balanced.
Many of our clients choose us specifically because they want a gardening company whose values reflect their own. They care about wildlife, soil health, pets, children and the wider environment, and so do we.

Can you help improve biodiversity without making a garden look wild?
Absolutely. We believe beautiful gardens and wildlife-friendly gardening go hand in hand. By carefully selecting plants, creating habitats and managing gardens thoughtfully, it's possible to support birds, bees and other wildlife while maintaining an elegant, beautifully cared-for garden.

Do you only provide maintenance?
No. We regularly help clients with planting design, border improvements, seasonal planting, garden renovations, kitchen gardens, orchards, ponds, pergolas, fencing and many other projects that help gardens evolve over time.
Can you take over the care of an existing mature garden?
Yes. Much of our work involves stepping into established gardens and understanding how they have developed over many years. Our aim is to preserve what makes each garden special while helping it continue to flourish for years to come.

How do you decide what a garden needs?
We begin by understanding the garden rather than following a standard checklist. We consider the existing planting, soil, wildlife, the way the garden is used and the owner's aspirations before recommending a long-term approach tailored to that particular garden.
